Summer Glow Up

It’s that time of the year again where we enjoy long hot days and warm nights. Summer is about sunshine and tans and is the perfect time to add some extra glow to your makeup routine to create a natural, sunkissed, no-makeup makeup look. There are some tips and tricks to perfect this look that I will share, along with some of my favourite products to get your summer glow on this season.

LESS REALLY IS MORE

There is no point applying heavy, matte foundation in summer where it will just melt off in the heat. Keep it light with a tinted moisturiser or a BB cream that delivers undetectable sheer coverage with a radiant finish. Bonus points if it also contains an SPF which most do these days. If you don’t want to invest in a secondary foundation, try mixing a small amount of your current foundation with a moisturiser prior to applying. This creates a sheerer coverage. If you can’t go without your concealer, ensure that you have applied a serum or balm to the face to allow it to blend in seamlessly. Bright sunshine will make any heavy, matt finish foundation stand out and look unnaturally harsh in daylight so less really is more.

GET YOUR GLOW ON

However you wish to add luminosity to the face, whether it be in liquid, cream or powder form, the goal is to create a subtle radiance that catches the light. Avoid products that are too glittery or frosty. Liquid highlight can be worn alone or mixed with foundation. Apply highlighter to the cheekbones, bridge of the nose, cupid’s bow and inner corner/centre of the eyelid. Cream highlighters provide easy application if you are not too heavy handed - just blend with a brush or your fingers to get your glow on.

BRONZE

Bronzer is an essential product for a summer makeup look. It adds warmth and natural colour to the face making you look healthy and radiant. However with so many different types of formulations on the market it can be tricky to find the perfect one for you. Choose the incorrect one and the skin can end up looking blotchy, glittery, too dark or too washed out. The rule of thumb is to choose a bronzer that is only one or two shades darker than your natural skin tone. Also try to choose a bronzer that has a matte finish with a very subtle sheen. This will be more versatile to use on other areas of the face (eg; eyeshadow) as well as looking much more natural.

EYES + LIPS

Keep it simple with natural tones on the eyes. Shimmer can work well here to brighten the eyes. Don’t forget to url your lashes and apply mascara to the upper lash line only to avoid any unwanted smudging under the eye. Keep lips protected from the elements with an SPF lip conditioner. There is nothing worse than dry, chapped, sunburnt lips. Opt for sheerer, glossier formulations, to finish off your summer glow makeup look.
